Is there anyone out there who is still capable of the following two feats: a) peruse through the pages of a book written for the gentle analysis of an adult mind, other than for the enjoyment of an overstretched adolescent, whimsical, gadget-loving e-book reader?; and 2) judge an author for the aesthetic, stylistic and thematic achievements of his or her writing other than his or her political stances or human rights preoccupations, however commendable these may be? And just in case all of the above is not too much to ask, I would really love to contact someone who is a true lover of both the classics (and I do not mean great books like The Catcher in the Rye or The Wild Palms, but Greek drama, Chaucer, Proust or Dante) and modern literature as well, without entrenching themselves in one camp or the other, like freedom fighters viewed as sinister guerrilla slaughterers by the opposing side. May I have one more wish? True aesthetic judgment also involves doing away with multicultural, sectarian, post-modernist approaches that attempt, with childish futility, to bury the work of the old masters as unwanted relics of racism, sexism and bigotry. If Harold Bloom and Allan Bloom and Oscar Wilde and Walter Pater have been largely responsible in the shaping of your literary tastes, I would love to read from you.
